Giovanni Vitacolonna was born in the heart of South Philly on Guy Fawkes Day in 1948, the Friday of the same week that Harry S Truman astounded political pundits by winning the Presidential election. It's been a life full of pleasant surprises ever since. Giovanni entered adulthood as a Franciscan friar until his spirit drove him to San Francisco, actually it was a 1969 Volkswagen van. Eventually he found himself in Italy working as an English teacher and eventually in film and music promotion. The Winds of War, Paul Mazursky's Tempest, The Rolling Stones, Jackson Browne and Bob Dylan were among the productions he worked for at various tasks. He is the published author of A Sweet and Sour Romance (1982), and was a senior editor for Philadelphia's Au Courant. Among his accomplishments at the weekly was the creation of the satirical serial Between Two Rivers. Giovanni managed a band in Nashville, worked for Billboard there and transferred to New York where he worked for Adweek. Eventually he moved on to CDM Publishing, where he functioned as Circulation Supervisor and Community Outreach for POZ and Real Health magazines. Giovanni is also an accomplished cabaret singer performing in small clubs in Manhattan. He has developed the television series Center City, a project he is currently advancing for production and development.Giovanni Vitacolonnahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08880521291885563549noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-830414224176899822.post-10707116429391104072023-04-03T16:28:00.004-07:002023-04-03T16:28:44.677-07:00A window on the GayborhoodGiovanni Vitacolonnahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08880521291885563549noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-830414224176899822.post-18956456920000756482023-03-12T19:16:00.004-07:002023-03-12T19:23:45.873-07:00American Caponata: It's A Philly Thing
Center City, the series, is well worth the effort. It is based in Philadelphia. The
Greater Philadelphia Film Office, a non-profit economic development agency
committed to the growth of the regional film and video production industry, can
" provide the producer free assistance with parking, permits, labor, and
locations, and generally act as the liaison between the production and the
local community, cutting red tape as we go." It is unique and adaptable to
any premium outlet.

In the first chapter of A Sweet and Sour Romance (Gay
Men's Press 1982) the narrator articulates a recipe for deconstructed caponata.
Caponata is a classic Sicilian dish often describe as a relish. The secret is
to cook each ingredient separately as to retain the integrity of its taste. A
deconstructed caponata is a tapestry of color and taste. It is an exceptional
salad, an agrodolce, meaning bittersweet or sweet and
sour. A delicious metaphor for life.

The story of Center City is all about diversity. The
narrator is a Latino former call boy who introduces the parts of this caponata with
aplomb. He is someone who has been there and done that. His soft spot, if not
an Achilles heel, is his love for Italian American Marc, an ex-priest. the son
maternal, formidable, and yet sexy Anna. Tommy introduces us to Anna and her
family who sit in Church at a memorial service for her fraternal twin brother
Gaetano who has not been seen or heard from for 7 years, “Anna. I can't
say enough about this woman. Except to say that if this memorial is important
to her, it's important to me. I loved her brother. I love her.”

The story telling is initiated through the eyes of sous chef Tommy, a
reformed rent boy who has a connection to almost every character.

This story sheds a light on the Church and what its ministers are, with an
emphasis on their relationships to and with each other. We have something to
say about the fluidity of sexuality, mature women, single motherhood, MUSIC,
FOOD, non-stereotypical Italians and subtle humor. Well, there may be something
stereotypical here and there. Stereotypes do exist.

The gay men here are an integral part of the story telling. Center City,
Philadelphia is home to the Gayborhood.

Italian Americans are an important part of the American world view. In

In the long history of the development of Center City there existed the idea of pitching it to ABC and SoapNet with Frank Valentini as the Executive Producer. Agnes Nixon's creations, All My Children and One Life to Live were based in a fictional suburban Philadelphia where the inhabitants were often going to Center City, which is what Philadelphians call their downtown area.

The critical success of General Hospital's Nightshift was the inspiration. In an earlier incarnation Center City was called Between Two Rivers. We decided to draw on that history and that of the wonderful characters in Pine Valley and Llanview and have them crossover to interact with the Fontana-De Marcos and other core families who live in a fictional Philadelphia.

It's unfortunate that iAgnes Nixon's "stories" are no more. SoapNet, too, disapeared. There is still a strong, solid market for storytelling with a long story arc. While Center City is not precisely a Soap Opera in the sense of Daytime TV's "stories" it is a serial drama with a long story arc and rich back story. We're convinced there is a place for it and we continue to pitch it where we think appropriate. The biggest hurdles are to get the right people to look at the solid pilot script and the unique story behind it as well as attaching the right people.

It could be a mini-series or a series extending for ten episodes every season. The Bible is and we know exactly where this story is going. The back story is very clear and rich.

The center of the action is an Italian restaurant in Philly's Rittenhouse Square. A divorced Sicilian American mother of two grown sons struggles with the disappearance/death of her fraternal twin and a partner in the restaurant she now runs to keep the family legacy alive. There is an ensemble cast of characters depicting the tapestry of the Philadelphia ethnic landscape. In addition to the Italian matriarch, Anna--the most central of the matriarchs, there are matriarchal characters like Marlena, Rita, Norina and Annunziata,

Our stage readings have been memorable. General Hospital's Lisa LoCicero brought Anna to life at West Hollywood's Celebration Theatre.

Actors tend to love it: "I just finished Center City and I’m really impressed. Your dialogue is real and witty and often moving– it rolls off an actor's tongue. On a personal level, its so refreshing to a read an authentic story about a piece of my beloved hometown … you have juicy, interesting, three dimensional characters living in a wonderful story. Thank you for sharing this wonderful story with me." ~ actor/playwright Mark Borkowski (Boardwalk Empire)

[Philadelphia, PA, June 18, 2018] We are thrilled to announce that Lisa LoCicero has agreed to join this exciting TV project set in Philadelphia. Lisa is no stranger to this exciting new pilot, helping us a few years back at West Hollywood's Celebration Theater for a staged reading. Lisa led the other actors in bringing all our wonderful characters to life. If there is anyone who can carry off the ominous character of Olivia Falconeri on General Hospital it is this formidable actress. The natural beauty has been on screens big and small for more than a few years. She has been on three ABC Daytime Serials. Seems the Alphabet Network is taking advantage of a good thing.

Beautiful, sexy, but tough, Lisa LoCicero started on Loving in its final season, and then stayed with the character when the show was spun off as The City. When The City ended in 1997, she moved into film (The Family Man, Rush Hour 2) and television roles. From 2004-2007, she played the role of Maria Storm in the series Reno 911! In 2004, she also appeared on One Life to Live as Sonia Toledo Santi. In the fall of 2008, LoCicero again entered daytime as Olivia Falconeri on General Hospital. She has proven to be immensely popular with the fans.

We are thrilled to have the formidable Lisa LoCicero as part of the CENTER CITY team.
My parents were from a small town in Sicily and migrated to South Philly where I was born, along with my fraternal twin, Gaetano. The restaurant they opened downtown in the Italian Market area was named after my brother and it did so well we were able to re-locate uptown to Rittenhouse Square. Now, I am the only one left of the four of us. God knows what happened to Guy. One day he walked out the door to go to the market. That was it. Gone. My sons Marc and Domenic are with me now. My former husband Nick rarely comes around and sometimes stays away for months. I used to think that when I was older, I’d know everything, I’d have all the answers. I thought when my sons would ask me, “What should I do, Ma?” I’d know exactly what to say. But nobody ever told me all the answers. They act as if they know everything, but you know how much they don’t know, because you know how much you don’t know.
On April 29, 2013 We had the good fortune of having the very talented Lisa LoCicero reading the part of Anna and showcasing CENTER CITY in West Hollywood at Celebration Theatre. It speaks well of her talent that she was able to interpret the part of an older woman. She did bring elan and panache to the reading, showcasing Anna as she ought to be.Giovanni Vitacolonnahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08880521291885563549noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-830414224176899822.post-66822249802541444672013-06-25T15:43:00.000-07:002017-07-13T18:29:28.069-07:00The Passion of Marc

Marc left the friary where lived in common with other priests and brothers, among whom is his mentor and sometime lover Father Jacob Scaletta. His relationship with the older cleric propelled him to leave religious life and re-examine his identity as a professional Christian and a gayman. His story examines much of the hypocrisy that exists within the Church regarding sexuality.

Marc De Marco was well liked and much admired for the brief time he taught at Ascension High School run by the Ascensionist Friars. That he was a faculty advisor for the athletic department made him even more sought after by students. However, his placement on that pedestal did not make his struggles any easier. The handsome young cleric was tortured by things present and past. His personal gods showed him no mercy. In fact there didn’t seem to be much difference between the gods and demons within him.

He comes off as strong and calming, but the demeanor belies his inner turmoil.
Jacob is not about to let him go, and there is always Tommy Avalon waiting in the wings.

About.com has this to say: Beautiful, sexy, but tough, Lisa LoCicero started in daytime as Jocelyn Roberts Brown on Loving in its final season, and then stayed with the character when the show was spun off as The City. When The City ended in 1997, she moved into film (The Family Man, Rush Hour 2) and television roles... In 2001, after [the birth of her son] she took a small break, doing voice overs. From 2004-2007, she played the role of Maria Storm in the series Reno 911! In 2004, she also appeared on One Life to Live as Sonia Toledo Santi. In the fall of 2008, LoCicero again entered daytime as Olivia Falconeri, Kate Howard's cousin, on General Hospital, and has proven to be immensely popular with the fans.
CENTER CITY COMES TO WEST HOLLYWOOD
MONDAY APRIL 29 7:00-9:00 PM

New York, New York (April 17, 2013)
--12th & Latona Productions in conjunction with John Colella and Giovanni Vitacolonna are pleased to announce a staged table reading for the pilot for CENTER CITY, a television series created by Mr Vitacolonna. Actors attached to the series who will be participating are: Lisa LoCicero (General Hospital, Reno 911), Don Jeffcoat (Eagle Eye, One Life to Live), Colton Ford (Naked Fame, The Lair), David Moretti (Scrooge and Marley, The Lair), Richie Nuzzolese (Katy Perry's "Last Friday Night", Voodoo Academy 2), Danny Donnelly (Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen) and Daphne Di Cinto (Gente di Mare). The acting communities in Philadelphia and New York have lent overwhelming support to CENTER CITY. Now it's a great opportunity to stage our pilot in Los Angeles. This is a rich and complex story taking place in the heart of Philadelphia. The script is especially well received across the board. The reading in California will provide a focus group experience and an opportunity for potential supporters to have a first hand experience of this great character driven story.

In the summer of 2009 he worked as the double for “Dennis’” in the hit show, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. In September of 2010, he made his stage debut playing “K.B.”, the depressed, bullied, and suicidal teenager, in the award winning stage play, When The Smoke Cleared. Danny also reprised this role when the play was brought back to the stage for the IChoose2Live anti-bullying campaign based on his character “KB” in February of 2011. Since then, Danny has been involved in five other theater productions. On his free time Danny enjoys, writing, drawing, painting, and photography. We are proud to announce that Danny is now attached to CENTER CITY, the television series created by Giovanni Vitacolonna in the role of Tommy Avalon.Giovanni Vitacolonnahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08880521291885563549noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-830414224176899822.post-20849931006241696482013-02-19T13:38:00.001-08:002013-02-19T13:38:56.211-08:00The Table Read In Philly

We are looking forward to our table reading which will take place in Philadelphia on Sunday February 17, 2013 at the United Republican Club 3156 Frankford Ave. We are hoping to bring out current cast members from the West Coast. Attendance is free. Take a moment to check out the project on Indiegogo and also share it with your friends. All the tools are there. Get perks, make a contribution, or simply follow updates, If enough of us get behind it, we can make 'CENTER CITY: The Pilot' happen.

It was Au Courant. While on a short sabbatical from life on Italy I became part of the fledgling weekly. One of the things we attempted to differentiate ourselves from PGN was the inclusion of an ongoing serial. Strongly influenced by Cyra McFadden's The Serial and Armistead Maupin's Tales of the City, both of which had their origins in print media, I created Between Two Rivers, an ongoing story of Anna DeMarco's world in South Philly and Center City. In its original form these characters were over the top and drawn with broad strokes. It also came about during the mid-term elections of 1982 and took more than one side way glance at local politics. Anna, in her original depiction, was a committee woman who went from door to door to get votes for her preferred candidates. One was Tom Foglietta who was considered by many to be homosexual. She defended him in the first episode on the telephone against such "slander." Unknown to her, she has two gay sons: Marc the priest and Domenic. Between Two Rivers attempted to address serious issues in a comedic and satirical manner.

We focused much of the action around landmark venues and businesses in the area.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 268px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJOR4YC-31VLVUGqYBzhgtH7gj5Yc_CKVNMYyjc7qJ7eHYY1lyMa2DNiLb8zBad5OFZS8ylGR5kWgq8GwMOXTd6F7t4RxWvNUqQON45A61b-hvrtdb5dOau5ZyyARXOWqjamRecgw2MW0/s400/GioRoom_40_ScottADrake.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5750251197209657826" />

During the run of General Hospital's spin off into cable prime time Night Shift which appeared to have a modicum of success, Between Two Rivers was revamped into Center City with a nod toward Agnes Nixon's euphemism for Philadelphia in her iconic serials, All My Children and One Life to Live. The intent was to pitch to ABC TV and draw on characters from "Llanview" and "Pine Valley".

In its current incarnation this story is being told dramatically and on its own merits while keeping its specific pedigree and history. Our intention is to continue to keep the focus on Philadelphia's identifiable venues and landmarks as well as Philadephia's diversity. The best thing about Philly is Philadelphians.

Center City the series receives very positive feedback whenever someone takes the time to take a look. These are vibrant, warm characters who are neither completely good nor completely evil. They are identifiable human beings who want to live out who they are. It is replete with family, music, food, love, passion, mystery and sex. We are quite proud of where we are taking this.

<img style="display:block;
